Wengen: the car-free sun terrace above the valley
No cars, no engines, just the cog railway and the Jungfrau right across the valley.
Wengen sits on a sunny shelf high above Lauterbrunnen, and the only way up is the little cog railway, which is exactly what keeps it so quiet. There are no cars, so you wake up to cowbells and the Jungfrau staring back at you instead of traffic. I treated it as a day up from my valley-floor hostel, but it's a lovely, gentler base if you'd rather sleep above the waterfalls with that view from your window. Here's exactly how I'd spend a day or two.

Best things to do
Ride the cog railway up from Lauterbrunnen
The only way in, and half the fun. The little train climbs out of the valley with the waterfalls dropping away below you, and Wengen appears on its sunny shelf.
Walk the Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg trail
The gondola lifts you to Männlichen, then it's a gentle ridge walk with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau lined up the whole way. The easiest big-view hike I did up here.
Slow morning on the village terrace
Just sit out with a coffee and the Jungfrau across the valley, no cars, no rush. The car-free quiet is the whole reason to come up.
Day-trip up to Kleine Scheidegg
The high pass under the Eiger's north face, where the Jungfrau railway sets off. I'd pack a picnic from the valley Coop and eat it with the peaks right there.

Getting there & around
There's no road up, so you arrive the same way everyone has for a century: take the train to Lauterbrunnen, then change to the cog railway, which climbs to Wengen in about 15 minutes. From Interlaken Ost it's roughly 40 minutes all in; from Zurich airport around 2.5 to 3 hours, all covered by the Swiss Travel Pass. Once you're up there's nothing to drive, you walk the village and let the trains, gondola and lifts handle the rest.

- Restaurant Bären — Cosy village spot for rösti and fondue after a day on the ridge.
- Coop Wengen — My budget move: grab rolls and picnic bits here and eat them up at Kleine Scheidegg with the peaks instead.
