Milford Sound: the fjord at the end of the road
A morning cruise under the cliffs, and the most beautiful drive I have ever filmed to get there.
Milford Sound is the place I pointed my whole Fiordland week at. There's almost no town here, just the fjord and the wharf, so I based myself two hours south in Te Anau and drove up the Milford Road for the day. That morning cruise, gliding right under the sheer cliffs with waterfalls dropping beside the boat, was the highlight of the trip. But the drive in is half the magic, so I left hours for it, not minutes. Here's exactly how I'd do it.
- Most people do it as a day from Te Anau, ~2 hrs each way
- No town, almost no signal: it's the fjord and the wharf
- Go early to beat the Queenstown coaches
Best things to do
Cruise out under the cliffs
The whole reason you come. A wilderness boat glides right under the fjord walls with waterfalls dropping beside you. Book ahead and take an early departure: fewer boats, softer light, and you're back on the road before the coaches roll in.
Drive the Milford Road slow
Stop at the Mirror Lakes, walk down into the Chasm where the river has carved the rock, and pull over for the valleys that make you gasp. This stretch was the most beautiful filming I did all trip.
Kayak the fjord at water level
A guided paddle puts you right under the cliffs at sea level, quiet and tiny against the walls. Dress warm and go with an operator; the water is properly cold.
Stand at the foreshore lookout
The free postcard view of Mitre Peak straight off the car park, no boat needed. Best early, before the day-trippers arrive and while the water's still glass.
Where to stay
Getting there & around
You really need a car for this one. Milford is a day-drive up the Milford Road from Te Anau, around two hours each way with no fuel and almost no phone signal once you leave town, so fill up in Te Anau the night before and download your maps offline. There's a long tunnel (the Homer) on a single-lane wait, so don't book a tight cruise time and then race the road. Check the road status before you set off, it closes for avalanche risk and rockfall, and drive it slowly, on the left, pulling fully into the marked bays to stop rather than on the road.
Eat & drink
- Milford Sound Lodge cafe — Near-enough the only food at the fjord itself, so I'd grab a coffee here and not expect much choice this far up.
- Te Anau, before you drive — Stock up and eat in Te Anau: pack a picnic and snacks for the road, because there's nothing once you're on the Milford Road.

A few of these earn me a small cut at no extra cost to you — only ever things I'd actually book.
Frequently asked
Can I do Milford Sound as a day trip from Te Anau?
Yes, and that's how I did it. It's about two hours up the Milford Road each way, so I left early, took an early cruise, and drove the road slow on the way back. Just fill up in Te Anau first and check the road status before you go.
Do I need to book the cruise in advance?
I would. The early departures fill up and they're the ones worth taking, before the Queenstown coaches arrive around midday. Book ahead, take a morning boat, and you'll have softer light and far fewer people on the water.
